Leland Holiday Paintings
On our recent trip to the West we found this collection of Ceremonial Faces by Leland Holiday, a self-taught sculptor and painter from Nageezi, New Mexico.
At age 25, Leland combines contemporary
techniques with traditional Native American sensitivities and imagery. Leland has had no formal art training and learns by experimenting.
Leland, and his older brother, Roger Armstrong, are the sons of an Apache mother and Navajo fathers. Their unusual heritage allows them to explore and combine imagery from
both tribes. Leland draws upon his mother's Jicarilla Apache roots to introduce elements such as Mountain Spirit dancers and powerful spirit figures. His upbringing in the Navajo community near the Bisti Badlands introduces a strong sense of whimsey and color.
As younger men, both brothers became well known as folk artists, but then moved to the
Pacific Northwest to work construction jobs. Recently, Leland has returned to the Four Corners region to recommence his art career.
His work frequently combines unusual techniques, such as the use of an electric router, with equally unusual painting iteas, such as spray painting. He is adept at producing three
dimensional carvings as well as drift wood wall plaques and paintings on routed composition board. Leland Holiday's return to folk art brings an abstract and contemporary perspective to self-taught Native American arts.
