Read Sherry Lucas' Article about Chris' Opening at the Attic from the Feb. 8, 2001 issue of the Clarion Ledger Artist Info: Chris Porter's use of photographic imagery augmented by free, expressive painting techniques truly make these pieces both painterly interpretations and realistic documentations of Southern African-American experience. Chris was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with an emphasis in painting and photography) at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. After returning to Jackson in 1987 she exhibited paintings, photography, and serigraphy (fine art silk screen prints); eventually bringing all these media together with her current series of paintings/photo-serigraphs. Her large, colorful mixed- media pieces begin with a photographic image which she transfers to a silkscreen. She prints this image, usually with black ink, forming the foundation of the piece. But it is her bold, yet sensitive use of acrylic paint which brings the finished work to life. |
