Photo Serigraphy by D. Boone
Even though I have no formal art training I became interested in printmaking while working as a picture framer in the Attic Gallery. Just being around so much creativity and handling real art every day inspired me to learn as much as I could.
In the 1970s the Attic Gallery, specialized in original graphics, and I became intrigued by this medium. My first printmaking experiments were with the technique of etching. The press required for etching is large and expensive, and I found it impractical for me. I was attracted to silk-screen printing, because I found it to be a flexible medium that would lend itself to such a wide variety of visual possibilities.
Before the Lights Went Out is a series of photo-silkscreen prints I have created depicting some of the people and scenes of Vicksburg, Mississippi before they disappeared. These images were made from black and white photographs taken at night which often required lengthy exposures. Today at most of the sites where these pictures were taken one could leave open the shutter of the best camera money can buy without finding any trace of the light which once shined from these faces and places.
